I am very excited to be writing you from Spain. My friend Daniel and I are living in a suburb outside of Barceona. I am a short walk away from the metro that takes us downtown. And the apartment is very small but everything is exactly where is should be. Our Senoria, or Carmen as she prefers, is very sweet and she knows some english which makes it easier to communicate. She lives in a three bedroom apartment (Daniel and I share one) and we have met both her children. Her daughter works in the New York UN and is visiting for a week and the only thing I could understand from her son is that he travels all over Europe. I have talked to some students in different home-stays where their Senoria doesn't speak any english. Yikes! I am thankful I can ask her questions about different words. My spanish is very choppy but Spaniards always like to correct you and it helps to just point at something you want. Carmen is very strict about recycling and separating food, paper and plastic. She doesn't smoke so the apartment has a nice spanish smell.... if you can imagine that. She owns a lot of books so maybe its the old books I smell along with her cooking.
On the first evening I caught a travelers bug and didn't feel to well, but I think it was just my body and mind adjusting to the new surrounding. But feeling better now!
Carmen cooks dinner for us every night and it is delicious. She made a potato, carrot, and pea salad, bread with tomato and olive oil, salad with balsamic and olive oil (She loves her olive oil.), cheese and jamon (ham). The jamon is amazing, salty and thinly sliced, perfect for any meal. I can't wait for the dinners to come!
We wake up very early in the morning because our window lets in a lot of light. So we are always up and ready for the day around 9:00. Our classes start at 10:45 each day so we have some time in the morning to explore or catch up on the computer.
Yesterday we explored Las Ramblas (big tourist area). Pictures will come. The markets are amazing, every fruit you could ever want, vegetables, along with octopus and suckling pigs. :( We walked around the Gothic District and were asked to leave a cathedral because the girls we were with had very short shorts.
Today we took the metro to a different suburb where the Picasso museum is and the Chocolate museum. We didn't have enough time to go in and made a note to return on another day. We will have time. But within the chocolate museum you can purchase all types of chocolate and even liquid chocolate you drink! I can't wait. We strolled down streets and alleys that are to pretty to put in words.
I don't know what tomorrow holds but pictures are soon coming.
Oh spanish class starts tomorrow!
Adios,
Will
